The United Kingdom has long been a travel destination for tourists and professionals the world over. As a global center of finance and commerce, the U.K. has attracted expatriates from around the world. The U.K. also has many historical and cultural sites, including Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, and Stonehenge among many others. Travel within the U.K. is rather convenient with an excellent transportation system within London, and rail and air service throughout the country.

• Citizens of the European Union do not require a visa to enter the United Kingdom. Many other nationalities also do not require a visa to enter the country for up to 90 days. Please check with the British government as to what entry requirements may apply in your specific case.
• Visitors from many countries do not require a visitor visa if their stay in the United Kingdom does not exceed 6 months. It is advisable to contact the nearest British consulate for visa requirement information.
• Serious crime is uncommon in most areas of the United Kingdom. Like any metropolitan area, petty theft and pick-pocketing may occur especially near tourist attractions and on public transportation.
• It is recommended to use only licensed taxis in the United Kingdom as well.
• Terror threats are taken very seriously in the United Kingdom as there have been several incidents over the past few years, including the terror attacks of 7/7/2005 in which dozens were killed. Visitors should heed any warning from the authorities and media regarding potential threats.
• Visitors should also avoid public demonstrations in Northern Ireland as sectarian violence may occur.
• While in the UK only use licensed public transport. There have been incidents with travelers using unlicensed mini cabs.
• Visitors should also be alert when using public transport, like buses or trains at night, as incidents of theft and violence have occurred.
