UAE Travel Advice
As Muslim country, visitors to the UAE should respect the local laws and customs based upon the Islamic faith. These customs are very different from those found in the West and other parts of the world.
- Many foreign visitors to the UAE can stay for up to 60 days on visits for business or leisure. For visits over 60 days, a visa must be obtained prior to travel.
- Women should dress in a modest fashion, meaning they should ensure the tops of legs and arms are covered and underwear cannot be visible.
- The weekend in the UAE was recently changed from Thursday and Friday to Friday and Saturday.
- Importing pork products, pornography, and narcotics is prohibited.
- The punishments for drug offences are severe. If drugs are found in your system, it is seen as narcotics possession which carries at least a 4 year jail sentence.
- Sex outside of marriage is also a punishable offence, as is adultery and homosexual behavior.
- Authorities in the UAE also maintain a tough policy of alcohol related offences. There is a zero tolerance policy on drunken driving offences, as well as other alcohol related incidents such as public drunkenness and the consumption of alcohol outside of a licensed establishment.
- Crime in the UAE is uncommon with most incidents involving petty theft. Women should be vigilant when traveling alone at night.
- Terrorism is a potential threat in the UAE as terrorists have continued to make threats against areas in the Gulf region.
- Visitors should also avoid any sort of public demonstrations.
- When traveling into the desert it is important to only use an appropriate 4x4 or off-road vehicle. Trips should be done in a convoy, and travel plans should left with friends. It is also recommended to take a mobile phone and an ample supply of water.
Sex outside of wedlock, adultery, and any homosexual behavior is illegal. Rude gestures and swearing are also punishable offences.
