Waiting Period

When deciding on the international insurance plan that is right for you, it is important to consider whether any waiting periods may be associated with your desired benefits, and how long those waiting periods may be. Waiting periods are used to prevent a policyholder from presenting large claims soon after signing on to an insurance plan, or from claiming on pre-existing conditions.

Many insurance companies employ waiting periods for particular benefits included in international insurance plans. Typical coverage areas where waiting periods are used are maternity, dental, and psychiatric treatment. The duration of a waiting period varies among insurance companies, and it will be indicated in the policy conditions section of the insurance plan.

The most commonly encountered plan benefits that have waiting periods are maternity and dental. Maternity waiting periods are usually between 10 to 12 months, so it is advisable to plan ahead if you thinking of starting a family in the future. Dental waiting periods are also usually about 10 months. Again, all insurance companies have different policies regarding the use of waiting periods, so it is best to speak with one of our advisors.

An International Health Insurance advisor will able to help choose an insurance plan that provides the coverage you need and inform you of any waiting periods that may apply.
